  1. Tell us a little bit about your cafe—what is the ethos of your business? What was the inspiration for opening Nutrition Republic?  
Nutrition Republic was born from a desire to only consume real, wholesome and nourishing food based on my husband’s and my personal health experiences and journey to wellness.
Our vision was to create spaces where people become healthier, happier and more conscious so they can live life to its fullest. We offer products, services and a customer experience that aligns with our vision for health and happiness. This essence flows throughout everything we do, in every way, for everyone; it is our responsibility, our passion and our gift to the world. 
We believe in a better world: a healthy and happy world. Our menu is simple and nourishing, predominantly plant based, with all food items being gluten, dairy and refined-sugar free. This is the way it will always be. We only use real, natural, minimally processed ingredients and source local, organic and chemical-free ingredients where possible. 
100% complete transparency is one of our highest values. Our menu has been thoughtfully created to provide flavoursome nutrition, inspiring people to consume consciously and nutritionally.
  1. We can see that you are into health and wellness. Do you have any tips for people who want to improve their quality of life? 
  • Eat more real and wholesome food. It helps if you just keep adding in the good stuff until you crowd out the bad stuff.
  • Move often and get outside when you can!

  • Drink lots of water.
  1. What are your top three Instagram accounts and why do you like them?
That's a hard one. There are so many amazing accounts and my favourites have definitely changed over time depending on where I am in life. Right now I'm loving following:
@spoonful_of_sarah: she's just so real, raw and inspirational—the ultimate #girlboss
@garyvee: I love his passion and no-BS approach to work and doing what you love
@lewishowes: I'm a huge fan of his podcast too! He connects so deeply with his guests and always shares nuggets of gold with everyone on Instagram.
4. What is your wildest dream? 
To travel the world sharing the Nutrition Republic vision.
5. What are you grateful for right now? 
Simplicity. Evenings at home. 
6. Where can people find you on a Friday evening?
Either hanging out at our Plant 4 Bowden cafe or at home cooking dinner for hubby and I and watching a movie!

Doing More with Chai

Chai ... It’s not just for tea. There are countless ways to integrate healthy and tasty chai into your everyday life. Here’s one way for you:
 
This creamy, heartwarming and spicy beverage is perfect for chilly nights. 
Ingredients: 
  • 20g Prana Chai + 100ml water
  • 250ml milk of choice (we used oat milk)
  • 2 TBSP pumpkin puree
  • Honey or maple syrup (optional)
  • Star anise and/or cinnamon powder (to garnish)
How to:
  1. Place Prana Chai in a Prana pot, add 100ml water and boil for 30 seconds
  2. Add milk to the pot and simmer for five minutes (stirring occasionally) 
  3. Remove from the stovetop and strain the hot chai into a blender. Add the pumpkin puree and mix until well blended
  4. Pour into your favourite mug and add honey or maple syrup if desired. Garnish with star anise or a sprinkle of cinnamon powder

Sticky Chai vs Chai Latte Powder

In our books, there’s only one way to enjoy a chai tea—the real way. That is, a chai made of an irresistible blend of natural spices and black tea, brewed with milk and sweetened to taste; just as it’s been served for centuries in India.

But since chai teas have become increasingly popular, there are more and more ways you can buy and brew your cuppa.

Chai Blends & Sticky Chai

Traditional masala chai comes as a spicy blend that’s usually made up of black tea, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and ginger.
These spices are boiled in milk to activate a delectable and aromatic flavour that’s ‘classically chai’. You can add sugar to taste, but the original chai is strongly spiced and not overly-sweet.
We have our own special take on this blend, and have added a dash of honey to ourPrana Chai Original Masala Blend to create a ‘sticky’ chai. The honey isn’t just a natural sweetener and preservative—it also helps to prevent “de-blending”, so that every cup of chai has an equal blend of spices.

Chai Latte Powder

Alternatively, you can make your chai from a powder mix. Chai latte powders are usually made up of spices, vanilla extract, and powdered milk. It’s like a hot chocolate sachet, but for chai.
It’s a popular option since it’s so easy to make; just add hot water or milk and you’re set. However, you also have very little control over powdered chai mixes. They’re often pumped full of artificial sweeteners and preservatives to prolong their shelf life. They tend to be much sweeter than a traditional chai.
A third option is chai made from liquid concentrates—but we find these barely merit the chai title at all. They’re normally incredibly sweet and hardly resemble the original chai in any form.
So what’s your pick? A sweet chai powder or the original blend of natural spices and black tea? We know what we’d pick.
